Chile’s National Cemetery has memorials and gravestones for many of the victims of Pinochet’s dictatorship. It spans 210 acres, and feels almost like a village. Most notably, Victor Jara (first), Violeta Parra (second), and Salvador Allende (third) were all buried there. Although Violeta Parra killed herself before Pinochet’s dictatorship, she was considered an icon for many of Pinochet’s opposers. There are also memorials for the MIR and MAPU members who were killed because of their protest of Pinochet’s dictatorship, as well as political prisoners and other disappeared people of the dictatorship. The National Cemetery is a massive memory site in Chile, but also has the bodies of many non-famous Chileans, giving it a unique and humbling feel (http://santiagotourist.com/cementario-general-de-santiago-chiles-grand-and-historic-cemetery/).
